How to Prevent Burnout
The fourth commandment “Remember the Sabbath” may be the most ignored, yet it’s God’s remedy for burnout. True rest isn’t collapse but renewal, body, mind, and spirit. Just as Elijah needed restoration, we too are invited to step off the treadmill of busyness and embrace God’s rhythm. The Sabbath isn’t restriction; it’s rescue. Will you trade burnout for the joy of the Lord?

Church. Today we'll be addressing something that normally we don't talk about and we'd like to be silent about this. In our lives it's not easy to admit, and especially as leaders, as parents, as professionals and even as believers, we are expected to have everything together. Everything should be in its place, right. We don't want anything to fail. We don't want anything to be in the negative to fail. We don't want anything to be in the negative right. We pursue, we work hard in such a way that our life is stable and, no matter what it takes, we are willing to pay that price so that we are in that place and we are all on that journey. The truth is that even the strongest can run empty. The strongest can fall right, and we are all human beings and it is quite reasonable or understandable that we all fall, you know, one day or the other.
Speaker 1:I wanted to read to a real story. This is a person who has been in the ministry, who is a pastor, you know, serving the kingdom of God, and this is what he has to say. So I want everybody to please pay attention. It says a few years ago, after two decades of serving in the ministry, giving my all, he says, loving people staying disciplined. I hit a wall hard. So there are times in our lives we all just go down and you know, down that road and this person was going through that I did not see it coming. I never expected this. I'm doing the ministry, I'm praying for people, I'm preaching the ministry, I'm praying for people, I'm preaching my heart out. But suddenly he failed, he fell. I kept saying I can handle this, I can handle this, I can take this up and just pushed a little more and then it's just a busy phase. I think it will pass by. So we try to work in such a way that this phase will pass by, this difficulty will pass by and one day everything will be fine. We try to push it across, maybe over time, work over time, because I have to do this. Nothing wrong about it, but someday you have to know you will fall right. And that's what we are talking about today. And this person was saying that right, I was busy, doing so much and I was thinking this whole thing will pass, this whole element of what I'm going through will pass, but it did not. The stress kept building, the energy kept draining and one day, boom, I hit bad. I was not just tired and he says I was burned out.
Speaker 1:The reality of burning, burnout in India. I want to see some of the statistics. We got to be real. We are living in a time and a you know place where it's demanding and high pressure cultures in the world Work culture, family culture, social culture. There is an element that you have to fit into, otherwise you feel taken aback. According to a 2022 report by ADP Research Institute, india is the most overworked country in the world. Please pay attention. A survey by LinkedIn India found 74% of working professionals feel stressed at least once a week and more than half of them they are experiencing burnout In cities like Hyderabad, mumbai, bengaluru, delhi. You know whether you are in a startup or MNC, government or private, burnout is real. Some of us we don't admit it. Some of us are there, but we think it will pass by. We'll get through. I have that strength. I have the connections. The connections it's affecting our body and our spirits. Let's understand what are the types of burnouts that we have in our lives.
Speaker 1:Number one occupational burnout. Right, according to Indian corporate employees, burnout is especially high in IT, finance and healthcare sectors, with long hours, constant digital connectivity, unrealistic performance targets as major cause. Two parental burnout being parent taking care of children globally. Parental burnout being parent taking care of children globally 2021 international investigation of parental burnout found that 36% of parents across 42 countries reported high levels of burnout. Three digital burnout screen fatigue Emotional exhaustion caused by prolonged exposure to screens, social media or virtual meetings. And that's our language and our time. Today, india has over 750 million users. This is according to TRAI 2024. A survey found 67% of users feel tired or mentally fatigued due to excessive screen time. The next one caregiver burnout Affects all those caring for ill, elderly or disabled family members. In India, over 50 million caregivers are women. The stress leads to both physical and emotional breakdowns. According to HelpAge India, 75% caregivers reported stress, anxiety and depression.
Speaker 1:Next one people like us who are in ministry and people like each of you who are believers you know, or some of you serving in the church. It is common among pastors, christian leaders or active volunteers who feel drained from constantly serving others without renewal. Symptoms include feeling spiritually dry, emotionally numb or questioning your calling. Why am I doing? What am I doing? Where am I going? I feel the same all my life. I'm following the Lord for 10 years. I feel the same. I don't see any change in my life.
Speaker 1:The next one academic burnout. I don't know if there are students here, but the students are out, but we have academic burnout. I don't know if there are students here, but the students are out, but we have this academic burnout. Mental and emotional exhaustion due to academic pressure, entrance exams and expectations by parents. You have to hit this, you have to get this score. You understand? Is this the language of today? Is this what we are hearing today? Is this what we are hearing today? This is what we are hearing today. In India, students face extreme pressure, leading to over 10,000 students' suicide every year. This is according to NCRB. A survey by Time India Today group in 2021 found 68% of college students reported mental health challenges due to academic stress. All the young kids.
Speaker 1:The last one in the list I put emotional burnout, compassion fatigue. This happens when people constantly help others. We are talking about social workers, counselors, who are always sitting and listening, listening to others' problems, and they are trying to solve their problems, trying to show them their solutions, and they get burnt out too by giving all this help and the solution. These burnouts. The list is not limited, you know. I just put some of it. Probably there are other things that are affecting the people today, and the list actually continues, right? So these burnout impact faith, faith, family and our emotional health.
Speaker 1:Let's try to differentiate between burnout and stress. Are they both the same or is there any difference? Right, uh, stress, it's a deadline. Right, it's like an exam that you know. Maybe an year after year you write an exam, or in three months time, it's like a deadline, or a work present. You have to present something. You work on it, right? So stress is? It's a temporary pressure, short term in nature. It comes and it goes, so you must understand where you are. This is like a checklist for each of us who are believers. Where are we? Are we just in stress, undergoing stress, or have we moved from stress to another level?
Speaker 1:Burnout, it's-term depletion. It's when nothing seems to help anymore. All your efforts are going in vain. You're trying to come out, but you still feel the same. You're doing all the things right praying, showing up, smiling but inside you are numb, you don't feel it anymore. Burnout is chronic and it's an ongoing stress with no relief in sight. You went to this person. You thought they will give you relief by offering some words. You come back discouraged. You go and do take up this gym activity, think that it will help you and then after three months you realize it's not helping you. Then you start some new activity. You know, you understand we are trying and we are pursuing things so that we can come out of things in our lives. No relief. You are working hard, giving your best, but something inside feels empty. You're not just tired. If you feel like that, you're actually burnt out. You're actually that in that category.
Speaker 1:Burnout leads to sleeplessness. Anybody here who has issue with sleeping? At certain point of time in my life I had really a terrible time. I know what it means. I'm in bed for eight hours. Still I know I'm not sleeping, my mind is still active. Then only I realized what sleep is all about. What is the patterns of sleep? Then the deep sleep. I had nothing.
Speaker 1:Anxiety or panic attacks, sarcasm. You find people who are sarcastic. They pass sarcastic comments. Then that means the root cause is that they are actually burnt out. They don't appreciate you, they are not happy about you. They pass sarcastic comments about you. They are sarcastic about everything. Then you know there is a root cause. Why. Why is this person talking like why is this person behaving like this? It's the reason because they are actually burnt out and that's how they are showing up.
Speaker 1:Even spiritual coolness, right, talks about you being burnt out. If you are in that category, you don't love the word of God, you don't pray. Coming of God, you don't pray. Coming to church is just a religion, just to give a tick mark, and that's the person who's actually in that condition. And then you also feel where, where is God in your life? Where is God in your life? You don't feel God anymore. You don't see God coming to your rescue. You're trying to make attempts in your life. All those attempts are a failure. Right, you're trying to have great plans for your life, but it's not working out. And sometimes it is like the Israelites they start at one place and then after a year you are in the same place. They found it same way. One year ago I was in the same place, but I came back again. 11 days journey took years in their life and some of us sitting here, one day's journey actually is taking us years in our lives and we don't realize we are actually burnt out.
Speaker 1:There was this person in the Bible who was burnt out and his name is Elijah. Prophet Elijah, a powerful man of God. He was just like us and he had a great fall. Elijah won great spiritual victories. He stood up to 850 false prophets. He killed them and seen fire coming down from heaven. He was riding on a high spiritual life but then a threat came from Queen Jezebel. I'm sorry, just one threat broken. I'm reading 1 Kings 19, verse 3 and 4.
Speaker 1:This is what he said. Some of us probably can relate. Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. He came down to a broom tree, sat under it and prayed I don't know how many of you are praying such kind of prayers. Language may not be the same, but the idea, the thought or the reasoning behind you probably is the same. And he said Lord, I had enough of it. Take my life. Anointed man of God, called by, I had enough of it. Take my life. Anointed man of God, called by God, a prophet of God, mighty acts he did. Nobody could stand against him. Everybody were in fear of this person, elijah.
Speaker 1:And now today, this same person is going through burnout. I had enough of it, o God. I really don't want to live anymore. I've taken too much in my life already For a person like that. He comes to that place. Have you ever said those words? I can't handle this pressure. I feel like I'm falling off. I'm not a good parent. I've given everything, but I have nothing left. Elijah, a mighty prophet, felt that way, and if it happened to him, it can happen to any one of us, anyone seated here. It can happen, and probably some of us are already there and we don't realize it. We think this will pass. We think one day will come, everything will be okay, things will turn around, but we don't know. We are in such a bad state that no thing will really help us to come out of it. I will talk about Elijah's story a little later, at the end, but bear with me.
Speaker 1:How does God respond to burnout? What is the response of God when he looks at burnout? We live in a time where we all carry, you know this busy is worn like a badge of honor. You all understand Like I'm wearing this jacket. We all put a tag I'm busy, pastor, I'm busy. Go to library no, I'm busy, pastor, I am busy. Go to library no, I am busy. Pastor. Go to church no, no, I will go next week. Pastor busy, everybody is busy. We all want to wear the tag.
Speaker 1:And if you find yourself and show your calendar, this fellow has nothing in his calendar. Everything is. This is waste fellow, there is nothing to do in his life. He is wasting his life. We want to keep our calendar busy. We want every day one. This, I will do that. I will do that. I will go to this place, I will meet this person. I want to achieve this. Oh, our aims, desires and the things are so much and we want to pursue them. Nothing wrong about it, my friend, but I want you to understand is it leading you to a place of burnout?
Speaker 1:Today we are studying God's 10 commandments and we are looking at one of the most ignored commandment by all the believers in the church. We all know we are studying Canon J, john series on just 10. And we're doing, we're studying the 10 commandments and we are focusing today on the fourth commandment. All right, now what does the fourth commandment say? Exodus, chapter 20, verse 8. Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. This is the key scripture for us today. What does it say? Remember Everybody, remember to observe the Sabbath day, keep it holy, keep it holy, keep it holy. So today's sermon, which is titled keep the Sabbath day holy how to prevent burnout, that's what we are looking at today. God gave us this commandment not for restricting us, but to rescue us. What is he talking about? Why is he talking about Sabbath? Why is it a commandment not for restricting us, but to rescue us? What is he talking about? Why is he talking about Sabbath? Why is it a commandment to take time out and participate in the Sabbath? Canon J John talks about three principles which we're going to look at today. Right, which talks about the Sabbath that will help us to prevent burnout and live a life of joy and a victorious life.
Speaker 1:The first one the Sabbath day is a day to rest your body. Somebody say the day, everybody say the day, to rest your body. Somebody say the day, everybody say the day to rest your body. Amen, that's the first thing he says. God works six days, okay, and on the seventh day he was tired and he rested. Bible never says that the Bible says he worked for six days. Seventh day, he rested. Bible never says that the Bible says he worked for six days. Seventh day he rested, alright. Seventh day he rested. So he was showing us a rhythm. He was showing us. You work for six days, but on the seventh day you take time off, you take participate in the Sabbath. That's how you're made. We are wired to take rest. We are designed to take rest.
Speaker 1:Exodus, chapter 20, verse 9 and 10, please, let's read the scriptures. You have six days each week, say ordinary. God thinks your work is ordinary. Somebody is saying, oh, I am CEO, I am this, I am that, you know, I am too important person. He says six days in a week. Huh, you have six days in a week for At ordinary work? No, no, I am this, I drive BMW at ordinary work. He says I am not saying he says that's ordinary work, but no, no, it's important for me. No, no, my position is this no, no, I have to take that ordinary work. He says it's gone.
Speaker 1:The scripture Okay, six days of the week, ordinary work. Don't make it extraordinary, don't keep it on your head. I have to do overtime, I have to go on Saturday, I have to go on Sunday. He says it's ordinary work. Next verse what does it say? But on the seventh day, please read it's a day of Sabbath of rest dedicated to the Lord. Seventh day dedicated to the Lord. My friend, one day, take rest, give it to the Lord. That's the commandment On that day. Come on, please read. No one in your house. Then Parents tell your children what Includes you, your sons, daughters, male and female servants and any visitors comes to your house. You understand, did he cover everybody? He covered your car, also Livestock. You know your camels, your donkeys who are taking you from A to B places. He's telling you give them rest. Somebody say amen, amen. That's what the scripture says. I want you to hear to the story. This is in the BBC News. All right, as on 25th September 2024, please pay attention to this.
Speaker 1:Anna Sebastian, a bright, promising 26-year-old girl, a chartered accountant, who joined a new company in a certain position. From the outside, everything looked perfect education, ambition, job, top job and good salary and good company to work. But beneath the surface, pressure built rapidly, only four months, into a role, anna started suffering from overwhelming anxiety, sleeplessness and emotional fatigue due to restless, relentless workloads and long hours, according to her mother. Mother had to say something. Anna returned home utterly exhausted, day after day, struggling to rest and recover. She would go to work, come back, but I never saw her resting so that she can recover to herself. I've never seen. Just days before her sudden passing, she collapsed from exhaustion.
Speaker 1:No prior health issues, no health complications. How on earth a person who's healthy, who's so passionate, career oriented, working, trying to build their lives and career, suddenly lose their life one day? That's how life is, my friend. Suddenly lose their life one day? That's how life is my friend. You don't know when. Suddenly things will change, and this happened in this person's life. The post-mortem showed cardiac arrest, but the family believes it was work-related stress that broke her physically and emotionally. This is a real story. You're all real people and it can happen to anybody if they don't know how to participate in the sabbat rest, god has designed Amen. Amen In the Sabbath rest. God has designed Amen. The Sabbath reminds us we are not machines. Every machine will break down one day. You're not built to go non-stop.
Speaker 1:God says take a day off, shut the laptop. They are all very serious. Let your soul breathe. Turn to your neighbor and tell them take a day off like you mean it, guys, like it should be. Take a day off, take a day off. Huh, then next shut the laptop, shut. Yeah, I know this message is more for me Shut the laptop, shut, yeah. I know this message is more for me than anybody else Because, yeah, shut, she tells me. My wife really tells me shut the laptop, come on, it's time, but I'm always on it. Shut the laptop, tell your neighbor. Huh, shut the laptop. Tell your neighbor, you're all looking at me, my dose is already given to me, I don't need more doses. You exchange yourself. Shut the laptop, let your soul breathe the fresh breath that designed by God for you and for me. Amen.
Speaker 1:Number two Sabbath is a day to recharge your emotions. There's a beautiful phrase in Psalm 23, he restores my soul, right, so your soul comprises of your mind, your will and your emotions. None of you can show me your soul because it is not in a realm to show. But yes, we can perceive, we can understand how soul comprises of your mind, your will and your emotions. So when you talk, your mind is active, right, your will, your decisions right, and your mind, your will and your emotions. When you cry, your soul realm is activated. When you're happy and joyful and you're smiling, your soul realm is active. So where all is initiated, being initiated, that is your soul realm. So Psalm says he will restore your soul. So when you go to God, when you are in the Sabbath, when you're taking the time to be with God and taking a day off, god comes and he will restore your soul. He will restore your mind, he will restore your will. If you're confused, if you're at crossroad, you don't know what to do, he will restore your will and emotionally too, he will strengthen you. He's the one who is the scripture. Is that 23? Can you put the scripture? Psalm 23? He restores, huh, yeah, he restores. Who restores Clubba Gymma? Who restores Shepard Shep? Who restores? Shepherd restores.
Speaker 1:I am not saying don't go to gym, as of you all go to gym. I have to go, more than all of you, to gym. Go to gym. Don't go to club, because eventually that will eat you pub. Anyhow, I leave that to you. It's your own decision. He will restore your soul. None of the activities in the world can restore you.
Speaker 1:My friend, weekend is off and you go. You want to party on your weekend. Weekend will make you weak. Amma, look at me. Oh, what happened to me? I thought I'll have pleasure. Look, I don't know where. Where is my house? You become so weak over the weekend, my friend, friend, that's why you have to come to church, at least I'll go and have communion.
Speaker 1:God will forgive me. So our communion is more sin approach than actually remembering what god has done through jesus for us. The Bible says whenever you take part in communion, remember me, but we remember ourselves. Oh Lord, I have done such a bad thing last night. Forgive me, abba. Praise God. Now I am ready for the new week. I can go and do anything and then come back again next week. Oh God, how terrible I am. Every week our story is like that when we are taking part in communion. That is a wrong way to take part in communion. Communion never advocates or the last hour never advocates to remember this in that way, but to remember the sacrifice of Jesus and you take part in communion. He will restore your soul, amen.
Speaker 1:I want you to read this scripture talking about the feast. You know the Sabbath, what we need to, what is actually this Sabbath? What am I supposed to do? How am I supposed to take rest? Can I just lie down in bed and feel I've taken rest? What I need to do? What is this for? Leviticus, chapter 23, verse 3.
Speaker 1:Please look at the scripture. There are six days when you may work, you may work right, but seventh day is a day of Sabbath. Rest Everybody. Come on Sabbath, rest, a day of sacred. So on Sabbath, what you do is you go to the assembly of the sacred. That's your church, amen. And then what else you are not to do? Wherever you live, it is the Sabbath to the Lord. So, basically, take rest, relax your mind, get your emotions right, your body right. Go to church, be the brothers and sisters. Relax your mind, get your emotions right, your body right. Go to church, be the brothers and sisters, encourage one another, don't miss church. Turn to your neighbor and tell them don't miss church.
Speaker 1:The third one the Sabbath day is to be renewed, spiritually right Body. Then what's the second one? Emotions your soul. Then your. You are a spirit, you have a soul, you live in a body. Sabbat touches all three parts of your realm. Psalm 46, verse 10, be still and know I am God. Somebody say be still, stay put, stay there, just wait there. Know that I am God, amen. Stillness is not weakness, it is worship. Sabbat is all about reconnecting to your creator. That's what Sabbat is all about. The Sabbat is not about checking into church just to say we did. It's about letting God do surgery on our hearts. It's about aligning ourselves with God and presence of God. Amen. So God invites you into this rest.
Speaker 1:God says if you honor the sabbath. I wanted to see this scripture in Isaiah, chapter 58, verses 13 and 14. Alright, this is the scripture. What does it say? I want everybody to read this, please aloud. It says if you keep your feet, please read Breaking the Sabbath and from doing as you please on my holiday Is Sunday holiday or holy day. But who told you it's a holiday? Who told you it's a holiday? Holy day is twisted to be a holy day. The Sabbath day is a holy day, not a holiday. Amen, if you keep your feet from breaking the sabbat and from doing as you please on my holy day.
Speaker 1:If you call the sabbat a delight, that means basically saying the sabbat day where you are in God's presence, gathering together, it's your delight, it's your passion, it's your joy. No, I just don't go to church because I have to go to church. It is the place of God where I need to be there. It's my joy, it's my privilege. Those who are delighting themselves and the Lord's holy day and keep it honorable. What does it say? Please read.
Speaker 1:And if you not going your own way and not doing as you please and speaking any ideal Anybody knows ideal words as you please and Speaking Any idle? Anyone knows idle words. It's not I-D-O-L. Not idle outside on the street. Idle words are words that you just utter. Just you think I have one mouth. I will just say things. Stop saying idle words. I don't know why God put it there. It's for a reason, amen.
Speaker 1:And then it says verse 14. No, no, no, no, no, wait, wait. First word. Then Then, when, okay, not everybody is with me. When Then, okay, not everybody is with me. When Then, oh God, I can't hear you. When Then, then Say then Then.
Speaker 1:So that means, if God is your delight, if you're keeping sabbath holy, if you're taking time out, if your reverence in worshipping God, honouring God, praising God, right, stop speaking idle words. Huh, then, oh, no, no, I go to church, I serve communal, I'm a worship leader. Huh, is that in the Bible? I am a preacher, I am a pastor. Is that in the Bible?
Speaker 1:Then, when you go to church to worship God, to honor God, to glorify God, then the Bible says then you will find. You will find. Whatever you are seeking in your life, you will find your joy in the Lord. Amen, and I, what? Come on, read, I will cause you to rise up right in triumph on heights of the land and to feast on the inheritance, the father of Jacob. This is the word of the law. How many of you are struggling, my friend? How many of you are going through this burnout situation? If you participate in the Sabbath, if you take rest and the three things that we talked about, your life will never be the same again. Amen.
Speaker 1:God comes back to Elijah, you know, and through, firstly, he comes through angel right and angel taps and says come, what happened? No, no, this is what I feel. Don't worry, don't worry, Get up, get up and eat. Get up and eat. That's what I'm also telling. Get up, not, lover, in your situation. Get up from that place, go and eat. Go and do something different. Go for a walk, go and meet a friend, go to a counselor, meet somebody, go to church. Get up and do something. Come on, you can't be sitting there in that rut. Elijah, come on, get up from that place. You know what the Bible says he gets up, he eats and then he sleeps. Wow, how can he sleep when the enemy is after them. Amen. God gave him rest. He gave him food. He gave him sleep. God gave him rest. He gave him food. He gave him sleep when he knew how to be in the rest God has designed, amen.
Speaker 1:Some tips Take a nap. Just relax and take a nap. Not in church, this is not the place to take a nap. Go for a walk, go and eat a great meal. Talk to somebody you trust, a friend or a mentor. Spend some quality time with God. Don't isolate yourself. Burnout grows in silence, but healing begins when you are connected with one another. Ask for help. Burnout is not weakness, it's a warning light. God created Sabbat not to burden us but to bless us. Amen.
Speaker 1:Please follow the notes. There's so much more in the notes. Can we all rise to our feet? I don't know what you're going through, but this is your moment to ask God to touch you.
Speaker 1:I'm reading this scripture from Matthew, chapter 18, verses 28 to 30, in a paraphrased version. Please listen to me. He says are you tired, are you worn out, burned out on religion? Come to me, get away with me, I will recover you. Since simple words, he says come to me, come to me, you will find rest in a restless world. You want rest, you want peace, you want to recover, you want to be restored. It's only at the feet of Jesus. He says come to me and I will give you rest, rest, amen.
Speaker 1:Are you all blessed today? I said are you all blessed today? I want you to do a declaration today. Can we remove this? Can you guys come? We'll read this scripture?
Speaker 1:Alright, this is a beautiful psalm that we're going to read. It's going to come up here, alright, I don't know what you're going through. I don't know if you're on the path for burnout or if you're already in that. This is the solution. We are on the surgery table right now and Jesus is here and he's going to do something special for you. Amen, let's read this scripture, all of us together. Here we go.
Speaker 1:The Lord is my shepherd. I lack nothing. He makes me lie down and he restores my soul, even though I will fear no evil. Your heart and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil. Surely, your goodness and love follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Amen, even though you walk through the valley of shadow of death. My friend, fear no evil, amen. Burnout is real Right. Prevent it by participating in the Sabbath. Give what belongs to God. Church is not an option for you. Church is not an option for you. Church is not an option, amen. If you're a part of Hope, you See, be there. If you belong to some other church, go and be there, amen. Are you ready to trade your burnout with the joy of the Lord today?
